A Timeline of Agentic Commerce: Every Milestone That Matters

A dated, source-backed timeline of agentic commerce — from Anthropic's MCP in 2024 to the ACP, AP2, and x402 protocols, the card-network programs, and the 2026 Know Your Agent framework.

Agentic commerce feels like it appeared out of nowhere this year. It did not. It grew from a clear chain of events over about two years, one milestone at a time.

So here is that chain, dated, with a source next to each point so you can check it yourself. Where a date is approximate, I say so. Where a number is shaky, I say that too — because half the fun of this space is watching big claims not quite hold up.

2024 — The foundation

November 2024 — Anthropic releases MCP. Anthropic open-sourced the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This is the "discovery" layer: it lets an AI agent find and use a system's tools in a standard way. Nothing flashy, but it became the ground that later commerce work was built on. (Source: Anthropic, 2024-11-25.)

2025 — The protocols arrive

May 2025 — Coinbase launches x402. Coinbase introduced x402, which revives the old HTTP 402 ("Payment Required") status code for machine-native payments, usually in stablecoins. The first serious push for software paying software. (Source: Coinbase, May 2025.)

September 2025 — Google announces AP2. Google introduced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), which uses "mandates" to prove a human approved a purchase. It launched with real weight behind it: more than 60 partner organisations, including Mastercard, PayPal, American Express, and Adobe. (Source: Google Cloud, 2025-09-16.)

September 2025 — Coinbase and Cloudflare start the x402 Foundation. The two moved to make x402 a shared, neutral standard instead of one company's project — Cloudflare added native support the same day. (Source: Coinbase and Cloudflare, 2025-09-23.)

29 September 2025 — OpenAI and Stripe release ACP. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) launched under an open licence, and on the same day it powered ChatGPT's "Instant Checkout," starting with Etsy. This is the moment the category became real to the public — and with ChatGPT's reach, it reached a lot of public. (Sources: OpenAI and Stripe, 2025-09-29.)

October 2025 — PayPal joins ACP. An early sign that ACP was more than one company's idea. (Source: ACP project updates, approx. 2025-10-28.)

December 2025 — MCP moves to the Linux Foundation. MCP was donated to the Linux Foundation's new Agentic AI Foundation, co-founded with Block and OpenAI. By the donation date it already counted more than 10,000 public MCP servers and around 97 million monthly SDK downloads — which tells you how fast the floor was being laid. (Source: Linux Foundation and Anthropic, 2025-12-09.)

December 2025 — Stripe ships its Agentic Commerce Suite. Stripe packaged ACP into a single product so a merchant did not have to assemble it by hand. (Source: Stripe, approx. 2025-12-11.)

Early 2026 — Standards, money, and rules

January 2026 — Google details UCP. Google explained the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a decentralised, free standard for the whole shopping journey, backed by Shopify and 20-plus retailers. (Source: Google Developers Blog, 2026-01-11.)

Late 2025 to early 2026 — the market forecasts land. This is when the big numbers started flying. McKinsey put the global agentic commerce opportunity at $3–5 trillion by 2030 (McKinsey, Oct 2025); Morgan Stanley estimated $190–385 billion of US e-commerce through agents by 2030 (Morgan Stanley, Dec 2025). Treat these as educated guesses, not facts — but notice they all point the same way. Tellingly, Juniper Research (April 2026) named trust as the number one barrier to it all. (Sources: McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, Juniper Research.)

February 2026 — Stripe adds x402 support. Stripe connected its rails to x402, with USDC on the Base chain as the first pair. Card-world and crypto-world payments starting to meet. (Source: Stripe, February 2026.)

March 2026 — Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). Stripe and Tempo introduced MPP, a session-based payment protocol aimed at business use, with compliance built in. (Source: Stripe and Tempo, approx. 2026-03-18.)

March 2026 — first live end-to-end agent card payment in Europe. Mastercard and a major bank completed a full agent payment in production — not a demo, a real one. (Source: Mastercard, March 2026.)

March 2026 — ChatGPT changes its checkout approach. OpenAI stepped back from running its own Instant Checkout and leaned into product discovery, letting merchants keep checkout on their side. ACP lived on as the discovery layer. A quiet but important admission that owning the whole checkout was hard. (Source: OpenAI, approx. 2026-03-24.)

March 2026 — UK regulator issues guidance. The UK CMA set out how a business is responsible for the actions of its agents, much like it is for an employee. (Source: UK CMA, 2026-03-09.)

Mid 2026 — Identity and trust take centre stage

April 2026 — AP2 goes to the FIDO Alliance. Google donated AP2 to FIDO, the body behind passkeys, and the card networks joined the work. Agent authorisation moving toward a neutral standard. (Sources: blog.google and FIDO Alliance, 2026-04-28.)

April to July 2026 — x402's numbers get a reality check. Coinbase reported roughly 165 million x402 transactions and about $50 million in volume by late April 2026. Then the honest reading arrived: Chainalysis and CoinDesk showed much of that was memecoin and test traffic, with real daily commerce closer to $28,000. The rail is real; the headline numbers are not the whole story. Meanwhile the x402 Foundation moved under the Linux Foundation with 40-plus members, including Visa, Mastercard, Google, Stripe, AWS, and Circle. (Sources: Coinbase, Chainalysis, CoinDesk, Linux Foundation, 2026.)

Mid 2026 — Cloudflare pushes "signed agents."Cloudflare expanded support for proving which agents are real, using Web Bot Auth, and tied it to the card-network agent programs. (Source: Cloudflare, 2026.)

September 2026 — Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International align on "Know Your Agent." The three announced a shared plan for a Know Your Agent (KYA) framework to check agent identity. One honest note: this was a direction, not a finished specification — no public spec, no timeline yet. (Sources: Business Wire and Reuters, 2026-09-10.)

What the timeline tells us

Line these up and three things jump out:

  1. From one company to shared standards. MCP and AP2 both moved to neutral bodies. The winners here are likely to be open standards, not any one firm's product.
  2. From demos to production. Early 2026 is when real, live payments started — not just slide decks.
  3. From payments to identity. The newest work is all about trust: proving who the agent is, and who approved the purchase.

If you track only one thing from here, track the identity layer. That is where the next real milestones will come from. For the companies behind each event, see The agentic commerce landscape.
